Law360, New York (January 27, 2012, 2:04 PM ET) -- A presidential panel said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Energy should relinquish its responsibility for managing the nation's nuclear waste to an independent body, contending that the agency was not stable enough to oversee the efforts.
The Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future suggested Congress craft legislation to create a government-chartered organization separate from the DOE to oversee nuclear waste management. Lawmakers should also establish oversight mechanisms for the new organization, the commission said.
