EPA Sues Union Pacific Over Oil Spills In 3 States

Law360, New York (February 03, 2012, 8:13 PM ET) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sued Union Pacific Railroad Co. for Clean Water Act violations in three states Thursday, saying the railroad company had failed to mitigate the discharge of oil and coal from trains and railyards in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

Union Pacific, which owns the largest railroad in the United States, had experienced at least six spills from its railcars and locomotives in the three states, and failed to meet permitting requirements to prevent stormwater from washing oil, coal and other pollutants into nearby...
