Law360, New York (May 01, 2012, 6:43 PM ET) -- North Carolina’s environmental regulator said Tuesday hydraulic fracturing could be performed safely in the state only if its legislature adopts carefully tailored safeguards and enforcement mechanisms to regulate the controversial process.
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the state could consider permitting hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, operations once the General Assembly passed state-specific regulatory standards and funded a compliance and enforcement program.
