Forged Signature Claim Bars BP Spill Attys' Fee Bid: Judge

Law360, Houston (April 05, 2013, 9:57 PM ET) -- A federal judge on Friday ruled that a Texas attorney is not entitled to collect fees from settlement proceeds due a Louisiana fisherman from BP PLC over the Deepwater Horizon disaster because the man’s signature appeared to be forged to the lawyer’s contingency fee contract.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier found that Dien Nguyen did not knowingly hire Brent Coon & Associates LLP or Alabama attorney James J. Dailey, who also claimed Nguyen as a client, and that neither could take a cut of his settlement....
