Law360, New York (August 26, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has crafted a new initiative that encourages companies and government agencies to reduce the use of lead wheel weights.
The National Lead-Free Wheel Weight Initiative, which will be formally announced Friday in Detroit, is voluntary.
Lead wheel weights are fastened to wheel rims in order to balance tires. According to the EPA, the problem comes when the lead weights come loose and fall off, ending up in waterways or municipal landfills, where they can potentially contaminate groundwater and drinking water supplies....
