Detroit Medical Center Fined $30M For Illegal Perks

Law360, New York (January 03, 2011, 8:20 PM ET) -- Detroit Medical Center, a nonprofit that owns and operates eight hospitals in Detroit, has agreed to cough up $30 million in fines to settle claims brought by the U.S. Department of Justice that the company provided inappropriate perks to referring physicians.

The nonprofit allegedly handed out financial compensation and office space to doctors without written contracts, gave away tickets to sporting events, and improperly provided marketing materials for physicians, according to the settlement agreement the DOJ announced Thursday.
