4th Circ. Nixes Iraq Detainee Suit Over Contractor Abuse

Law360, New York (September 21, 2011, 7:29 PM ET) -- The Fourth Circuit on Wednesday ordered a lower court to dismiss a pair of tort actions seeking to hold defense contractors CACI International Inc. and L-3 Services Inc. liable for alleged detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

In separate 2-1 decisions reversing the lower court's rulings, the panel remanded both actions with instructions to dismiss them based on the finding that the Iraqi plaintiffs' state law claims over alleged wartime combatant activities overseen by the government were preempted and displaced by federal law....
