IG Spotlights $5.6B In Questionable Medicare Billings

Law360, New York (May 10, 2012, 5:29 PM ET) -- Medicare's independent watchdog on Wednesday identified billions of dollars in questionable billing practices at the nation's retail pharmacies, but federal health care officials cautioned that the inquiry lacked enough depth to conclude rampant fraud exists.

The inquiry, conducted by the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, looked at every Medicare Part D prescription billed in 2009 by the country’s nearly 60,000 retail pharmacies and found that about 2,600 of them had suspicious reimbursement patterns.
