Lawmakers Seek To Deny Medicaid Payments To IRS Debtors

Law360, New York (August 02, 2012, 4:15 PM ET) -- A government watchdog report released Thursday says Medicaid providers in Florida, New York and Texas received $6.6 billion in Medicaid payments in 2009 despite owing nearly $800 million in federal taxes, sparking lawmakers' calls for federal Medicaid officials to shut out providers with unpaid taxes.

According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, about 7,000 providers in the three states — representing 5.6 percent of Medicaid providers in those states — hadn't paid at least $791 million in federal taxes from 2009 and earlier. That figure is...
