Jury Hands Covidien $4.8M In Surgical Device IP Case

Law360, New York (March 23, 2010, 5:06 PM ET) -- A federal jury has found that Applied Medical Resources Corp.’s devices for minimally invasive surgery infringe a patent held by Covidien PLC, directing Applied Medical to pay more than $4.8 million in damages.

A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on Friday issued a verdict that Applied Medical’s Kii and Universal laparoscopic trocars violated one claim of U.S. Patent Number 5,895,377, which covers a valve system for cannula assembly and was initially issued to Covidien unit U.S. Surgical Corp....
