Medicaid Primary Docs To See $11B Pay Boost Under CMS Rule

Law360, New York (May 09, 2012, 7:33 PM ET) -- Doctors who provide primary care to Medicaid patients will be paid more for their services, at a rate equivalent to what Medicare pays, under a proposed rule announced Wednesday that will increase physician payments by $11 billion over two years.

Medicaid rates, which are set by the states, are almost always lower than those Medicare pays. A study published in Health Affairs found that, in 2008, the average rates paid for primary care by Medicaid fee-for-service programs were just 66 percent of the Medicare rates. Only...
