Law360, New York (June 12, 2012, 5:18 PM ET) -- Citing a dramatic spike in painkiller use, New York lawmakers on Monday unanimously backed legislation requiring doctors to write prescriptions electronically and mandating that pharmacists provide real-time reports when certain controlled substances are dispensed.
A key element of the Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing Act, or I-STOP, is a mandate that physicians starting in December 2014 use an e-prescribing system officials expect will largely eliminate forged and stolen prescriptions.
