Law360, Washington (June 21, 2012, 6:30 PM ET) -- Medical transport provider Rural/Metro Corp. will pay $5.4 million to settle False Claims Act allegations that the company and its subsidiaries charged Medicare for ambulance rides that weren't provided or medically necessary, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.
A former EMT with Rural/Metro and the federal government alleged the company and its subsidiaries, Rural/Metro of Central Alabama Inc. and Mercury Ambulance Services, provided Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennesse with nonemergency transportation to dialysis treatments.
