Medicare Launches Program To Combat Wheelchair Fraud

Law360, New York (August 03, 2012, 4:54 PM ET) -- Medicare will soon launch a pilot program aimed at tackling rampant fraud in claims for motorized wheelchairs, it announced Friday, in hopes that requiring prior authorization for the devices will cut down on scams and improper payments in the most fraud-prone states.

An estimated 92.6 percent of claims — totaling about $822 million — for such wheelchairs, also known as power mobility devices, don't meet Medicare standards, according to a 2010 study. Many of those improper claims are honest mistakes, but many are also deliberate fraud,...
