Bernanke Asks GAO To Audit AIG Bailout Docs

Law360, New York (January 19, 2010, 6:46 PM ET) -- U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke asked the investigative arm of Congress on Tuesday to review the Fed's involvement in the credit extension to American International Group Inc., amid criticism from lawmakers that the bailout of the insurance giant wasn't transparent.

In a letter to the acting comptroller general of the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Bernanke insisted that the Fed acted in the best interests of U.S. taxpayers in extending the credit to AIG.
