Insurance Watchdog Investigating Lap-Band Centers: Aetna

Law360, New York (January 27, 2012, 2:49 PM ET) -- Aetna Inc. is cooperating with a California insurance department probe into possible fraud against its members by medical centers affiliated with 1-800-Get-Thin that perform weight loss surgery using Allergan Inc.’s Lap-Band, the insurer confirmed Friday.

Marketing company 1-800-Get-Thin and Lap-Band surgery centers have been hit with litigation over operations that allegedly killed patients, and federal regulators and lawmakers have scrutinized the controversial device and its allegedly deceptive advertisements. The Lap-Band is a surgically implanted gastric band used to help patients lose weight.
