Law360, New York (July 10, 2012, 8:08 PM ET) -- Congress could interpret the U.S. Supreme Court's health care ruling as giving the legislative branch broad new powers to wield taxes as a cudgel to influence what kind of cars Americans drive and whether they own guns, conservative lawyers told a House panel Tuesday.
The House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxes, held a hearing Tuesday on the implications of the Supreme Court's opinion that the individual mandate is constitutional under Congress's taxing powers.
