Gates Wants 1 Agency To Handle Dangerous Exports

Law360, New York (April 20, 2010, 5:52 PM ET) -- Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has set forth a plan to reform the U.S.' export control system, calling for the creation of a single agency to license the export of potentially dangerous goods such as weapons and weapon components.

In remarks prepared for a speech to the Business Executives for National Security, a nonprofit group of business leaders, Gates said that the current system — which divides responsibility for enforcing export controls between the departments of Defense, Commerce and State — was inefficient and outdated....
