Thailand Threatens More Compulsory Licenses

Law360, New York (February 12, 2007, 12:00 AM ET) -- Thailand is forging ahead in its controversial battle to slash the cost of drugs, with a top health official on Monday warning the nation will issue more compulsory licenses for patented medicines unless pharmaceutical companies lower their prices.

Thailand’s public health minister, Mongkol Na Songkhla, said a ministry panel is studying essential drugs the country could buy or produce generic versions of while it negotiates cheaper prices for patented medicines, Reuters reported on Monday.
