Global Privacy Laws Advance To Keep Pace With EU

Law360, New York (August 16, 2011, 3:38 PM ET) -- Several countries worldwide, including South Africa and Peru, are revamping their data privacy regulations to resemble the European Union's notoriously strict guidelines, in a move that would make it easier for their companies to conduct business in Europe.

The EU enacted its Data Protection Directive, which forbade companies from possessing data without individuals' consent unless it was used for specific purposes, in 1995.
