Law360, New York (January 20, 2012, 5:54 PM ET) -- The U.S. on Friday appealed a recent World Trade Organization panel ruling that U.S. dolphin-safe tuna labeling rules restricted trade too much even though they do not discriminate against products from Mexico.
The U.S. has not taken issue with the portion of the decision upholding the legitimacy of U.S. efforts to discourage the sale of tuna caught with fishing techniques that endanger dolphins, but instead focused on the dispute panel's conclusion that the labeling provisions unnecessarily hinder trade, the U.S. Trade Representative's Office said.
