Law360, New York (March 10, 2010, 6:32 PM ET) -- Director David Kappos is the first to admit that the growing backlog of patent applications at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office poses a huge problem.

Since taking over as director of the agency nearly seven months ago, Kappos is facing a looming stack of 1.2 million pending patent applications, as well as 14,000 pending appeals at the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, which he said involve the most important applications because they are the ones worth fighting over and which are expected to rise...
