DirecTV Faces Patent Suit Over 'Single Wire' License

Law360, Los Angeles (December 21, 2012, 8:06 PM ET) -- Tallahassee, Fla.-based Global Communications Inc. sued DirecTV Inc. in federal court Thursday, saying the satellite television provider violated five patents for improved broadcasting technology by allowing third parties to build equipment relying on the patents after a licensing agreement lapsed.

The lawsuit raises allegations that DirecTV’s third-party manufacturers built set-top boxes that allow multiple signals to be sent over a single cable, infringing on Global Communications’ so-called “single wire” patents and breaking a 2004 settlement agreement from a prior patent dispute between the two companies....
