Alice Corp. Software Too Abstract For Patents, Fed. Circ. Says

Law360, New York (May 10, 2013, 7:59 PM ET) -- A deeply divided en banc panel of the Federal Circuit ruled Friday that a computerized platform for reducing risk in financial trading offered by Alice Corp. was merely an abstract concept that's ineligible for patent protection.

The appeals court issued a one-paragraph per curiam decision affirming a trial court's decision that each of the four patents Alice asserted against CLS Bank International were ineligible — followed by six strongly conflicting opinions on how much protection the U.S. patent system should afford software.
