USPTO Rejects NTP's Final BlackBerry Patent

Law360, New York (February 01, 2006, 12:00 AM ET) -- In a welcome relief for embattled BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd., the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a non-final rejection of the fifth and last patent at the heart of the company’s legal battle with patent holding company NTP.

However, the agency’s ruling Wednesday is not a reliable indication of the final outcome of the challenge, which very likely is still months away. Its decision may be reversed at a court hearing as soon as Feb. 24, or at an appeals court hearing...
