Steptoe Adds Blasey Ford Atty As Senior Counsel

(September 24, 2019, 6:21 PM EDT) --
Michael Bromwich
Steptoe & Johnson LLP has tapped a former federal prosecutor and counsel for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, one of the women who accused now-U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, as a senior counsel in its white-collar criminal defense group, the firm announced this week.

Michael Bromwich, whose career includes positions in both private practice and the public sector, joins the firm's Washington, D.C., office, according to the firm's Monday announcement. He will also work in New York.

"Steptoe's white-collar team has an outstanding national reputation among prosecutors and the defense bar," Bromwich said in a statement. "I've known [partner] Reid Weingarten for more than 30 years and have been extremely impressed by the top-tier talent he has attracted to the Steptoe white-collar team. I am truly excited about this opportunity to work with him and the group."

Bromwich's 40-year law career has included stints in private practice at litigation boutique Robbins Russell Englert Orseck Untereiner & Sauber LLP, Goodwin Procter LLP, Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson LLP, Mayer Brown LLP and Foley & Lardner LLP.

After nearly 3½ years at Robbins Russell, Bromwich in September 2018 simultaneously announced his representation of Blasey Ford, who accused Justice Kavanaugh of sexual assault before he was confirmed to the high court, and his resignation from the firm in a parting of ways some said was likely an act of self-preservation by the law firm.

In addition to Blasey Ford, Bromwich has also represented former FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

The Harvard Law School graduate has also served as a federal prosecutor, a special prosecutor and inspector general of the U.S. Department of Justice. During the Obama administration, he was a director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

He has been a consultant to police departments, including those in Chicago, Houston and Washington, D.C., on reform efforts as well as policies and procedures.

According to Steptoe, Bromwich has served as the independent monitor for Apple and Walmart.

During the 1980s, he was an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York and an associate counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel for Iran-Contra, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Bromwich founded The Bromwich Group, a strategic consulting firm, in 2012.

In a statement, Steptoe Chair Phil West said Bromwich has "deftly harmonized business, legal and political cross-currents."

He added, "We are thrilled to welcome Mike as the latest jewel in our crown."

Bromwich was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
