Citizens United Coexists With State Law: Mont. High Court

Law360, New York (January 04, 2012, 7:42 PM ET) -- In a controversial move, Montana's highest court said Friday that the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which removed restrictions on corporate political spending, does not negate Montana's law prohibiting political contributions to candidates by corporations.

The plaintiff-appellees — Western Tradition Partnership Inc., Champion Painting Inc. and Montana Shooting Sports Association Inc. — had sued the state's attorney general for a declaration that the Montana law violated their free-speech rights as elucidated in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.
