Law360, New York (March 12, 2007, 12:00 AM ET) -- A New Jersey jury ruled Monday that arthritis drug Vioxx contributed to the heart attack of an Idaho postal worker and ordered drug manufacturer Merck & Co. to pay $47.5 million.
Frederick “Mike” Humeston, who had been taking the arthritis drug for knee pain resulting from a war wound, said Vioxx caused his heart attack in September 2001. He lost his initial case against Merck, but New Jersey Superior Court Judge Carol Higbee vacated that ruling after new evidence on the drug was introduced.
