Law360, New York (May 10, 2012, 9:36 PM ET) -- A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committee on Thursday recommended that the FDA approve Gilead Sciences Inc.'s Truvada, an antiviral drug that could prevent HIV, with some lauding it as a major opportunity to fight the epidemic.
The drug already is used to treat HIV, but the panel’s recommendation marks the first time the government has pledged support for giving the medicine to uninfected people as a means of preventing the virus through sexual activity.
