Sens. Allege Drugmakers Financed Opioid Misinformation

Law360, New York (May 09, 2012, 6:11 PM ET) -- Two high-ranking members of the Senate Finance Committee are investigating whether drug companies used their deep pockets to encourage influential medical organizations to downplay the addiction and overdose risks of opioid painkillers, the pair announced announced Tuesday.

Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chair of the committee, and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said there was “growing evidence” that opioid makers had promoted misleading information about the risks associated with their products through "supposedly independent" medical organizations.
