Law360, New York (August 16, 2012, 6:24 PM ET) -- Thirteen U.S. senators asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday to toughen up its new standards limiting the use of antibiotics in livestock, saying the agency's guidance doesn't go far enough to prevent overuse and, by extension, the rise of drug-resistant bacteria.
The senators — 10 Democrats, two Independents and one Republican — told the FDA that its draft guidances released in April are too vague on critical points, echoing concerns by scientists and public health groups.
