Microsoft Blasts E.U. Antitrust Remedies As "Compulsory License"

Law360, New York (March 24, 2004, 12:00 AM ET) -- Microsoft's top attorney blasted the European Union’s decision to fine the software giant €497.2 million for antitrust violations, claiming the ruling would infringe its intellectual property rights.

In a conference call with reporters, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said on Wednesday the European Commission's decision amounted to a "compulsory licence" of the firm's intellectual property rights within Europe.
