Law360, New York (August 09, 2011, 11:37 AM ET) -- On July 6, 2011, Sir Paul Stephenson, the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police of London, issued a statement announcing that the Met’s investigation into alleged phone hacking by the U.K. tabloid News of the World had led to the discovery of documents describing “alleged inappropriate payments to a small number of [Metropolitan Police] officers.”[1] Stephenson also announced the existence of “Operation Elveden,” designed to investigate the existence of the improper payments.
