Popeyes Fights Hearst To Protect Name Rights

Law360, New York (December 01, 2011, 2:48 PM ET) -- The parent company of the Popeyes fried chicken chain asked a Georgia federal court Wednesday to rule that it can still use its name after a licensing agreement with Hearst Corp., which owns the rights to the Popeye the Sailor cartoon character, expires next year.

According to the declaratory judgment suit by AFC Enterprises Inc., Hearst licensed the rights to the Popeye character to the Popeyes chain in 1976. The chain plans to stop using the character in its marketing after the agreement expires in December...
