Entertainment News Co. Cries 'Free Speech' In Defamation Row

Law360, Los Angeles (August 29, 2012, 5:42 PM ET) -- Entertainment news website TheWrap.com urged a California judge Wednesday to throw out a defamation suit brought by philanthropist and author Elisabeth Thieriot, saying a May 9 article reporting on allegations of misconduct related to a documentary she produced and financed is constitutionally protected.

TheWrap's attorney Frank J. Broccolo of Sidley Austin LLP asked Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Barbara Scheper to strike down the suit under California's anti-Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation law, which is designed to prevent lawsuits that target free speech, saying the article...
