EU Widens Probe Of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines Deal

Law360, New York (July 01, 2009, 12:00 AM ET) -- The European Commission has dealt a blow to Deutsche Lufthansa AG's plans to acquire Austrian Airlines AG, with the announcement that it intends to conduct an in-depth investigation into the proposed merger.

The commission has opened a more detailed investigation into the merger over concerns about the reduced choice for passengers and the likelihood of higher fares, it announced Wednesday.

An investigation was already under way, and in mid-June the commission offered the airline more time to persuade it that a merger would not cause competition...
