John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., introduced a bill Friday that would eliminate a 67-year-old exemption that shields health insurers from federal antitrust law, as House Democrats and Republicans sparred over whether the health care reform law threatens competition in the industry.
The long-serving Democratic lawmaker and others have repeatedly moved to put an end to the McCarran-Ferguson Act's blanket antitrust exemption for insurance companies in the past, but the new measure is limited to health and medical malpractice insurers.
