Medtronic In Hot Water Again Over Spine Patents

Law360, New York (January 18, 2006, 12:00 AM ET) -- After last year’s record-breaking $1.4 billion payout to a Los Angeles surgeon, medical device maker Medtronic Inc. is now facing charges that it illegally sought patents based on the inventions of a New York orthopedic spine surgeon.

In late November, Dr. Harvinder S. Sandhu, backed by Medtronic rival Kyphon Inc., filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, charging Medtronic with breach of contract, trade secret theft and fraud.
