Law360, New York (March 02, 2012, 7:42 PM ET) -- Nonprofit advocacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center sued the U.S. Department of Education on Wednesday, accusing it of violating privacy rights by making illegal amendments to federal law that would expand the amount of publicly disclosed student information.
The group claims the Department of Education had no authority to amend the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act in December to reinterpret certain statutory terms — changes that eliminate legal duties for state and local educational facilities to protect private student data, the complaint alleges....
