Law360, New York (May 08, 2012, 6:56 PM ET) -- In a bid to foster competition, New York's Republican-controlled state Senate voted Tuesday to prevent the state from regulating Voice over Internet Protocol rates, bypassing Democrats who said the state should preserve its option to impose rules protecting consumers.
Senate Vice President Pro Tem George D. Maziarz, the bill's Republican sponsor, said the proposal would "facilitate competition" upstate, where many rural consumers lack choice when it comes to Internet voice services. Maziarz also said the measure would foster investment by VoIP providers.
