Judge Blames Army Corps For Katrina Canal Breach

Law360, New York (November 19, 2009, 3:30 PM ET) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' dredging of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet was a major cause of a levee breach that drowned parts of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, a federal judge has found, awarding more than $719,000 to a group of five residents.

Judge Stanwood R. Duval of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana issued his ruling Tuesday after a 19-day bench trial, finding the Army Corps negligent in failing to properly maintain the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.
