Study Finds Food Industry Puts Politics Before Safety

Law360, New York (September 14, 2010, 2:21 PM ET) -- The effectiveness of the federal food safety system is being stymied by special interests that inhibit the ability of government scientists and inspectors to protect the nation's food supply, according to a new study by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

A 44-question survey conducted earlier this year found that large numbers of respondents at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture had personally experienced various forms of political interference in their work from agency leadership, UCS said Monday.
