Law360, New York (July 27, 2011, 4:46 PM ET) -- Days before a scheduled trial, Massey Energy Co. has settled a 7-year-old mass tort brought by roughly 700 West Virginia residents claiming a Massey unit tainted groundwater with coal slurry, the plaintiffs' lawyer said Wednesday.
Residents of the West Virginia communities Rawl, Lick Creek, Sprigg and Merrimac filed the litigation accusing Massey subsidiary Rawl Sales & Processing Co. of dropping 1.4 billion gallons of coal slurry into abandoned mines between 1978 and 1987.
