EU Proposes Tough New Tobacco Laws

Law360, New York (December 19, 2012, 5:13 PM ET) -- The European Commission proposed strict new restrictions on tobacco products Wednesday, requiring 75 percent of the front and back of packaging to include picture and text health warnings and banning flavored cigarettes amid other crackdowns that would apply to the 27 countries in the European Union.

The proposal prevents tobacco manufacturers from including any “promotional elements” on the remaining 25 percent of its cigarette packs and stipulates that a statement that tobacco smoke contains 70 substances that cause cancer run on the side of the pack....
