Law360, New York (August 15, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has proposed that American Airlines pay $7.1 million in civil penalties for improperly deferring maintenance on safety-related equipment and for alleged deficiencies with its drug and alcohol testing programs.
The FAA said Thursday that $4.4 million of the proposed civil penalty was levied because American Airlines allegedly neglected to service two MD-83 planes after pilots reported problems. The aircraft were then flown 58 times without being fixed, which is a violation of FAA regulations.
