Grand Canyon Mining Ban Sparks Suit From Trade Groups

Law360, New York (February 27, 2012, 5:28 PM ET) -- Energy and mining trade associations sued the federal government Friday over a 20-year moratorium on new mining in a uranium-rich area near the Grand Canyon, saying U.S. officials had issued the ban under an unconstitutional law and hadn't properly considered its economic impact.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the moratorium Jan. 9, saying the move to bar new mining claims on more than 1 million acres of federal land near the Grand Canyon would protect Arizona's watershed from potential adverse effects from uranium mining....
