By Ian Stewart and Dean Rocco (July 16, 2018, 4:06 PM EDT) -- Only a few short months ago, it was unthinkable that cannabis would be legalized in any meaningful way at a national level within the foreseeable future. Recent developments in Congress and favorable comments by the president have caused a furor of speculation and bold predictions of impending legalization. The political landscape has changed so quickly that it can be difficult to put events in context. Deliberation is needed to avoid jumping to conclusions over the current prospects for full federal legalization, appreciating the obstacles yet to be overcome and recognizing what legalization will likely resemble when it inevitably happens. From our perspective as chairs of the national cannabis law practice of a top-60 ranked National Law Journal 500 firm, we hope to provide in this article the needed context and analysis for understanding the likely parameters of legalization and the obstacles that will be difficult to overcome, even with national cannabis reform....
