Law360, New York (June 17, 2009, 12:00 AM ET) -- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will stop approving coal companies' requests to inject slurry into mines until more studies can be done, the agency noted during a discussion with state lawmakers.
The DEP also said Wednesday it recommended companies that already possess permits for coal slurry injection monitor for groundwater contamination.
Only 13 slurry injection sites are left in West Virginia, but the practice was more common in the 1980s, the department said.
