Md. Lawmakers Greenlight Shale Impact Area Bill

Law360, New York (April 10, 2012, 8:14 PM ET) -- The Maryland legislature passed a bill Friday that would hold natural gas drillers responsible for any water supply contamination within a 2,500-foot radius of any well created in a deep shale deposit for a year after the last operation.

The bill, sponsored by Delegate Heather Mizeur, a Democrat from Montgomery County, is among about 20 introduced this session dealing with issues surrounding natural gas and oil exploration, including the controversial hydraulic fracturing technique — but one of only two to have passed.
