Schumer Says 'Extra Virgin' Test Bad For NY Olive Oil Biz

Law360, New York (May 16, 2012, 4:26 PM ET) -- A push by California growers for more rigorous quality tests to be performed before olive oil can be labeled "extra virgin" could threaten New York-based Sovena USA Inc., the nation's largest olive oil importer, Sen. Charles Schumer said Wednesday.

The New York Democrat wrote Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to say that a federal marketing order akin to the one being pushed by California growers could cost Sovena, which supplies about 50 percent of private label olive oil to U.S. retailers, $7,000 extra for every shipment...
